Crunchyroll brings in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment, Wild Bunch International and Eurozoom Suzume no Tojimari – simply titled suzume on the foreign market – to cinemas around the world. This is the latest film from the acclaimed Japanese director makoto shinkaibest known for works like 5 centimeters per second (2007), The Garden of Words (2013), your name. (2016) or The time with you (2019).

Why is?
The Japanese filmmaker describes Suzume no Tojimari as a modern adventure story, with elements of road movie and Action Tape, about his heroine’s growth and liberation.
“We need to think about how to close the myriad doors we’ve left open,” to express Shinkai regarding the central theme of his next feature film. “I have given Suzume this responsibility as she travels around Japan and closes various doors. I sincerely hope that this film will leave audiences with big smiles and emotions when it leaves theaters.”

Suzume no Tojimari is a coming-of-age story of 17-year-old protagonist Suzume, set in various disaster-ridden locations across Japan where she has to close doors, wreaking havoc.
Suzume’s journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu, southwestern Japan, when she meets a young man who tells her, “I’m looking for a door.” What Suzume finds is a single weathered gate, standing amidst the ruins as if it were protected from any catastrophe. Seemingly drawn to his power, Suzume reaches for the doorknob… Across Japan, doors open one by one, bringing destruction upon anyone nearby. Suzume must close these portals to prevent further disasters.

The film opened in theaters in Japan on November 11th. suzume It has the best opening weekend in all of Makoto Shinaki’s filmography, grossing 12.8 billion yen (about US$98.8 million) at the Japanese box office. It was also selected in the Official Competition of the Berlin International Film Festival and is nominated for Animation of the Year at the Japan Film Academy Awards.

main characters
- suzume iwato: A 17-year-old high school student who lives with her aunt in a quiet town in Kyushu. He often has strange dreams in which he wanders across the grassy plains among vast ruins as far as the eye can see.
- Souta Munakata: A young man traveling around Japan in search of open doors that bring disaster to those around him. He meets Suzume while going to certain ruins that contain a door.
- Daijin: A mysterious talking white cat who suddenly appears in front of Suzume. He often appears wherever doors open and gets on Suzume’s nerves.
- Suzume’s chair: A children’s chair that Suzume used as a child. A leg is missing. After a certain “incident” he comes to life and wanders around on his 3 legs.
Production team and Latino cast
Makoto Shinkai is the director, screenwriter and producer of Suzume no Tojimari. The project is animated by its flagship studio, CoMix Wave Films.
The production marks the return of several key collaborators from his most recent films: Masayoshi Tanaka (Your name.; The time with you) as a character designer; Kenichi Tsuchiya (The Garden of Words; Your name.) as animation director and Takumi Tanji (Children in search of lost voices; your name.) as artistic director. Kazuma Jinnouchi (Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045) the music will be performed together with the band RADWIMPS (Your name.; The time with you).
Actress Nanoka Hara was chosen to play the protagonist Suzume Iwato after an audition attended by 1,700 candidates. This will be his first role as seiyu in an anime production.
“Suzume no Tojimari It’s a story that reminds us of the importance of connection and human warmth, something that seems to have been lost in recent years.” It says hara. “After leaving the cinema, the whole world should look refreshed and alive. It’s a wonderful film that will make people appreciate themselves and the people around them even more.”

When it premieres Suzume no Tojimari?
Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment are responsible for distribution suzume subtitled and dubbed into Latin Spanish by the April 13, 2023 in cinemas from Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Central America, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. The film will be released in cinemas in Colombia on April 20th.
The pre-sale will be activated on Friday, March 31st.
