Sung Kang to Direct Live-Action Adaptation of ‘Initial D’

In a recent interview with the South China Morning Post, the veteran actor said of ‘Fast & Furious’,Sung Kangrevel, who is currently developing a live-action film adaptation of‘Initial D’a film based on the classic street racing manga by Shuichi Shigeno. Kang will direct the project, which will have a big budget.

“It’s about cars, drifting and cool stuff like that.”Kang said.“A kind of Rocky or Karate Kid. A fun, big budget film that expresses my love of cars.”.

“Initial D” was published in Kodansha’s Weekly Young magazine from 1995 to 2013 and was written and illustrated by Shuichi Shigeno. Set in the world of illegal street racing in late 1990s Japan, the story revolves around 18-year-old Takumi Fujiwara, a tofu delivery man who discovers his exceptional talent in car racing.

The manga was later adapted as an anime series with six parts and 87 episodes and aired between 1998 and 2014. There were also several anime films as well as a live-action film adaptation in 2005. This film starred Taiwanese singer Jay Chou, Japanese actress Anne Suzuki and Hong Kong actor Edison Chen.
