Winner announced – The Hollywood Reporter

Monica Sorelle, Monique Walton and Set Hernandez were named winners of three awards for emerging filmmakers at the annual Spirit Awards Nominee Brunch on Saturday.

Flower Moon Killer Star Lily Gladstone and Rustin Star Colman Domingo hosted the event for the non-profit arts organization Film Independent.

Stella Artois presented the Someone to Watch Award Mountains Director Sisters. According to Film Independent, the award recognizes a “first-time narrative filmmaker with a unique vision who has not yet received adequate recognition.” The award included a $25,000 scholarship.

Set Hernandez, director of Unseen, won the True Than Fiction Award, given to a first-time nonfiction film director. The award also included a $25,000 scholarship.

Finally, Bulleit Frontier Whiskey presented Monique Walton with the Producers Award, which, according to the organization, “honors emerging producers who, despite very limited resources, demonstrate the creativity, tenacity and vision necessary to produce high-quality, independent films.” The award included a $25,000 grant from Bulleit Frontier Whiskey.

“Given the enormous challenges facing independent artists, it is important that they are given the resources to advance their artistic visions,” said Josh Welsh, president of Film Independent. “The Emerging Filmmaker Awards provide important support to these talented artists, enabling them to continue to develop new work and thrive as unique artists.”

The winners of the remaining award categories will be announced at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards, hosted by Saturday Night Live alum Aidy Bryant, on Sunday, February 25, at the beach in Santa Monica, California.
