After their fruitful collaboration in Training day (2001), director Antoine Fuqua and two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington reunited to introduce us to Robert McCall. A former member of the US Marine Corps and the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) who faked his death after refusing to continue taking the lives of innocent people for the “common good.” However, he is unable to ignore the atrocities happening around him and so he becomes a champion of certain causes, an avenger of the exploited and oppressed.

Since leaving his life as a government assassin behind him, McCall continues to find it difficult to come to terms with the terrible things he has done in the past. Surprisingly, he feels at home in southern Italy and discovers that his new friends are under the control of local crime bosses. When events turn deadly, McCall knows what he must do: become his friends’ protector by taking on the Mafia.
